The Sweeney Todd revival will be led by Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford and premiere in the spring of 2023.

It’s true what they say! Josh Groban, a multi-platinum recording artist nominated for Tony and Grammy awards, and Annalee Ashford, a Tony Award winner, will make their formal comebacks to Broadway in Thomas Kail’s production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, will have performances at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontaine Theater (205 W) starting on February 26 and running through March 26. New York, NY 10036; 46th St. Today, producer Jeffrey Seller, who is in charge of the revival, made the announcement.

For the first time since the show’s first performance in 1980, Broadway audiences will get to hear Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning music on a grand scale with Jonathan Tunick’s original 26-player orchestration. This musical thriller is directed by Tony and Grammy Award-winning Josh Groban (Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812), who plays Sweeney Todd, and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford (Sunday in the Park). Mrs. Lovett is played by George and Kinky Boots.

Eight 1980 Tony Awards were given to the original Sweeney Todd Broadway production, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction for Hal Prince. The 1980 Olivier Award for Best Musical was presented for its London premiere.

With set design by Tony Award winner Mimi Lien, costume design by Emilio Sousa, lighting design by seven-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz, and sound design by Tony Award winner Nevin Steinberg, there will be music supervision by Tony Award winner Alex Lacamoire and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett. Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s historical musical depicts the tale of a cunning pie store proprietor and a bloodthirsty barber. Sweeney, who was sent by a dishonest judge, comes back to London years later in quest of his long-lost family. There, he forms an odd alliance with Mrs. Lovett, who runs the pie store that was formerly her old business. They cause mayhem on Fleet Street while dishing out some of London’s hottest and most delicious pies.
